Do an online search using the term “Internet Marketing” or “Website Promotion” and you will find thousands of websites offering tips and advice on how to find success online. Some will offer Search Engine Optimization tips and advice while others will actually do the work for you. Pricing for SEO work varies from a few hundred Dollars for a one to five page website optimization job to thousands of Dollars for more extensive work on bigger websites.

What exactly does an SEO firm get you for the money? Depending on what SEO firm you choose, some will simply give you Internet marketing tips that are for the most part widely available (and free) online. Often times, the advice can be nothing more than an opinion of what you should change about your website. Don’t get me wrong, some internal SEO for your site is absolutely necessary these days, but do you really need to spend $200 an hour to hire someone to tell you what needs to be done or is this something that every online marketer should have a working knowledge and understanding of? Absolutely!

We are living in the Information Age. Everything you need or want to know is at your fingertips… do a little research, read a book or two, cover all the forums that you can and get familiarized with the basic concepts of SEO and web design – you will save thousands of Dollars in SEO Consulting fees alone and you’ll be able to make critical updates to your site without having to hire someone every time your content changes.

Other SEO firms will actually “dig in” and get their hands dirty and do all of the work for you. They will manipulate your website’s code to make it more search engine friendly and then optimize it for your targeted keywords to get it ranking higher in the organic search result listings. While I suppose either of these methods (consulting with SEO professionals or actually hiring them to do the work for you) is better than nothing. However, it is questionable (to me) the need to spend hundredths, possibly thousands of Dollars on this service knowing that at any time your efforts and techniques could become obsolete the next time Google changes their algorythm.
